You should start at puppy training approximately 1-2 weeks after they come. This allows them to get comfortable and build a relationship with you. It can be detrimental if you start too soon without them trusting you. You also want to make sure your puppy is used to a leash and collar prior to starting puppy school and has a good reward history/ understanding of a marker
The exception to this rule is when attending an outdoor training venue. Luckily all of our 4-week venues are held at indoor venues, which are cleaned and sanitised for your puppies’ safety.
Yes, we have multiple puppy school locations available in Melbourne. We have training facilities in Donvale, Doncaster, Camberwell, Burwood, and Vermont. Plus, we also have our venue in Kew on Sunday mornings which you can attend after attending one of our courses.
In Dr. Ian Dunbar’s book “Before & After Getting Your Puppy,” he recommends that your pup meet 100 different people in his first month at home. This includes individuals of different heights, ages, and ethnic backgrounds, as well as people with glasses, canes, hats, umbrellas, in wheelchairs, etc. One of the easiest ways to contribute to this necessary level of socialisation is to attend puppy classes.
The positives of puppy school are also dependent upon the quality of training received and the skill level of the dog trainer providing the class. A good puppy school is worth the money and then some! But unfortunately, a badly run puppy school will cost you a lot more than just money…We discussed this recently in my blog on how to choose a puppy school.
But if you’re not big on reading, in short, avoid puppy schools that are not run by professional dog trainers ( they live, breathe and make their living of training dogs)
Attending puppy school won’t directly help with puppy biting. But it will help on teaching your puppy alternative behaviours and give you the opportunity to ask your qualified dog trainer any questions you might have and give you tips on puppy biting.
We wish we could say all puppy training was created equally, but unfortunately, it’s not. Remember, the quality training your puppy gets now will be the foundation of its learning and set the pace for the years to come!
Just to be clear, puppy kindergarten and puppy preschool mean the same thing – dogs mature much faster than we do, so the old seven-years-to-one ratio holds pretty true. So don’t bother making a distinction between the two – they mean the same thing to a puppy :-)
Our maximum intake age for our puppy classes is six months old,
Getting your puppy started early is key to their development. You need the right tools and guidance to help them learn the behavioural and life skills they need to be successful.
If your puppy is older than six months, we can still help you, though you can book in for dog obedience training
